The Body Mass Index (BMI) Factor

First of all we need to stablish if you need Weight Loss Surgery. When your BMI is higher than 31, it means that you are a good candidate.   Keep in mind that  to be a good candidate for Cosmetic Surgery you need a BMI of 27-30. This is the reason why you need to be aware of which one is the right surgery for you.  There is no shame and nothing wrong with the need of Weight Loss Surgery.  Many people have made the excellent choice to give it a shot.  They have started to weight loss immediately.  No more carving for food is a blessing that leads to a better quality of life.

How does Weight Loss Surgery work ?

Basically there are two reasons to peform Weight Loss Surgery:

  • Restriction – Surgery is used to physically limit the amount of food the stomach can hold, which limits the number of calories you can eat.
  • Malabsorption – Surgery is used to shorten or bypass part of the small intestine, which reduces the amount of calories and nutrients the body absorbs.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

The Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy is often called the Sleeve. This is a laparoscopic procedure that involves making 5-6 small incisions in the abdomen.  The surgeon uses a video camera (laparoscope) and long instruments that are placed through these small incisions. It is performed by removing approximately 80-85% of the stomach. No intestines are removed or bypassed. This is a procedure that limits the amount of food you can consume.

  1. Induces rapid and significant weight loss
  2. Restricts the amount of food the stomach can hold
  3. Requires no foreign objects and no bypass or re-routing of the food stream
  4. Causes favorable changes in gut hormones that suppress hunger, reduce appetite and improve satiety
  5. Involves a relatively short hospital stay of approximately 2 days

Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y)

The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is often called gastric bypass. It is considered the gold standard of weight loss surgery. This is a laparoscopic procedure that involves making 5-6 small incisions in the abdomen.

There are two components  to the procedure. First, a small stomach pouchis created by dividing the top of the stomach from the rest of the stomach. Next, the first portion of the small intestine is divided.  The bottom end of the divided small intestine is brought up and connected to the newly created small stomach pouch. The procedure is completed by connecting the top portion of the divided small intestine to the small intestine further down.  The stomach acids and digestive enzymes from the bypassed stomach and first portion of small intestine will eventually mix with the food.

  1. Produces significant long-term weight loss
  2. Restricts the amount of food that can be consumed
  3. Produces favorable changes in gut hormones that suppress hunger, reduce appetite and enhance satiety
  4. Reverses one of the primary mechanisms by which obesity induces type 2 diabetes.
  5. Involves a relatively short hospital stay of approximately 2 days

Other Procedures

There are also other procedures available such as Gastric Banding and Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch.  These may be recommended by the Bariatric & Metabolic Surgeon depending on your specific case.  The Gastric Balloon was popular in the last decades but it is no longer.  The balloon has a potential risk of deflating and it can move through your digestive system.  This may cause a blockage and surgery may be required to remove the device.
