SMAS (Superficial Musculo Aponeurotic System)
SMAS stands for “Superficial Musculo Aponeurotic System.” The SMAS extends from the top of the head to the bottom of the neck. The SMAS becomes loose and saggy when we age. Then we start to notice the nasolabial folds, marionette lines or neck bands along our lower face. A SMAS Facelift is considered as the technique used to raise the skin and SMAS layers separately, rather than together. It is less invasive than traditional facelifts and produces more natural results. And rest assured that the incisions are well concealed.
The SMAS Facelift Technique
The SMAS Facelift focuses on the lower third of the face and neck. Known as “lower facelift”, it targets the loose skin of the jawline and neck, eliminating the presence of jowls. It helps to define the jawline, creates a neck contour and softens the corners of the mouth. This technique is all about tightening and repositioning the SMAS layer. This will automatically create a youthful and natual-looking appearance. This procedure is available for women and men and has proven excellent results over the years.
Types of SMAS Facelift
- SMAS Plication Facelift – It lifts the SMAS by placing sutures in the jawline, jowls and neck to tighten the layer. This is a simple and minimally invasive procedure. Results last 2-3 years approximately.
- SMAS Excision Facelift – It lifts the SMAS by excising a strip of tissue and closing the gap with sutures. The excision usually extends from the angle of the jaw to the corner of the eye. This one is also a simple procedure. Results tend to last longer; 3-4 years approximately.
- Extended Sub-SMAS Facelift – It lifts the SMAS and platysma layers. A muscle flap is created by elevating the tissues underneath the SMAS. The layer is lifted off the face and smoothed out. The excess tissue is removed and tightened in its new position. Results last around 8-10 years.
- High SMAS Facelift – It is similar to the last technique, but better. It lifts the muscle layer and creates a structural reengineering of facial tissues. The difference is that also involves lifting the cheeks by repositioning the layers of SMAS. Results last around 8-10 years.
